2025 Tax Season

AS TAX SEASON COMES TO A CLOSE

Tax Extensions:
What You Need to Know

Haven’t dropped off your documents yet? There’s still time, but returns received after April 1st may be filed with an extension. Here’s exactly what that means for you and what, if anything, you need to do.

What’s happening: Any tax drop-offs we receive April 1 or later may be filed with an IRS extension. Your return may be completed after April 15 — but you don’t have to do anything to request the extension. We handle that for you.

Do I need to send a payment by April 15?

An extension gives you more time to file, but not more time to pay. If you expect to owe taxes this year, you may want to send a payment by April 15 to avoid potential penalties and interest.

If you expect a refund, you most likely don’t need to send anything.

How do I estimate what to pay?

A simple and reliable method: take what you owed on last year’s return and multiply by 110%. This is sometimes called the “safe harbor” amount — paying this helps you avoid underpayment penalties regardless of what you end up owing.

Example
Mr. and Mrs. Jones owed $1,000 on their 2023 return.
$1,000 × 110% = $1,100
They can choose to send in $1,100 with their extension this year.

You can pay more or less — this is just a starting point. The right amount depends on your situation.

How do I make a payment?

OPTION 1: Pay online yourself

Visit irs.gov to make a direct payment to the IRS at any time for Federal Taxes. It’s quick and you’ll get immediate confirmation.

For SC State visit dor.sc.gov/iit

OPTION 2: We’ll send you a voucher

Let us know the amount you’d like to pay. We’ll send you a digital voucher to submit to Federal or State with your extension.

Just contact us with the amount — we’ll take care of preparing the voucher for you.

Common questions

Will my return still get done?

Yes. An extension simply moves your filing deadline. We will complete your return as soon as your documents are processed, you’ll hear from us once it’s ready.

Does an extension hurt me in any way?

Not if you owe nothing or send a payment now. Filing on extension is very common and does not trigger an audit or flag your account.

What if I think I’m getting a refund?

If you’re expecting money back, you don’t need to send any payment. Your refund will be issued once we file your completed return.

Do I need to sign anything for the extension?

No. We file the extension on your behalf. There’s nothing for you to sign or submit.

The Process

Step 1: Complete Your Client Organizer

We’ve already sent you your Personalized Client Organizer through an encrypted email. Think of it as your “nothing gets missed” checklist—built from last year’s return (W-2s, 1099s, K-1s, mortgage interest, and more).

  • Review it to make sure you have all the documents you need to have your 2025 Taxes Prepared.
  • Then answer each question with Yes / No / N/A. Please sign it before giving it to us.

Investment Clients: If you have accounts with us at Schwab Institutional, we’ll pull the necessary investment tax forms for you—one less thing on your plate.

Step 2: Download & Complete These Forms
